Chipperfield's STUDY 2022-23

This project was an in-depth exploration that spanned eight months, starting in September 2022. During this time, we were tasked with selecting an architect to study and use as inspiration for our work. I chose David Chipperfield, captivated by his minimalist yet structurally powerful design approach. His ability to create spaces that balance simplicity with a commanding presence deeply inspired me throughout this project. By delving into his work, I aimed to understand and reflect his mastery of form, proportion, and materiality in my own designs. This journey offered a profound opportunity to learn from one of architecture's contemporary visionaries. The assignment consisted of five major components: The Representative Work, a Pavilion, the Puzzle, the Panels and a Case Portfolio. For the Representative Work, the objective was to select a project by the chosen architect and recreate it as a scale model. I chose the James-Simon-Galerie by David Chipperfield as my subject. For the materialization of the model, I focused on capturing the contrast between old and new—a key theme in Chipperfield's design of the James-Simon-Galerie. To represent this contrast, I used wood to symbolize the classical building that Chipperfield renovated, reflecting its historical character. For the newly constructed modern addition, I chose plaster, emphasizing its clean, minimalist design. This deliberate choice of materials allowed me to convey the relationship between tradition and innovation that defines Chipperfield's architectural approach, making the model not only a reproduction but also an interpretation of his vision.

Hi, I’m Lander De Clercq, the name behind project LDC. I was born and raised in Hasselt, Belgium, where I’m currently pursuing my studies in Architecture at the University of Hasselt. Now in the second year of my bachelor’s program, I’m diving deeper into the world of design and structures. From a young age, I’ve always been fascinated by buildings and the stories they tell. This passion drives me to create designs that combine functionality, beauty, and a sense of purpose."A beautiful spot isn’t meant to be built on. Find a place nearby where you can cherish the view."
